VOLUNTEER!

Are you interested in helping WITS do this very important historical work?

There are a few ways that you can help this project.

1. Verification

Steps:

1. Choose whichever cemetery or cemeteries that you want to work on. Please check this map Cemeteries in yellow and red are in work and are available to work on. Cemeteries in green are considered "complete" or chose a cemetery or cemeteries not on the map, feel free to do as many as you like!

2. Contact WITSCivilwar@gmail.com and let us know which cemetery (cemeteries) you want to work on. We will provide you with a preliminary list of names.

3. Go to the cemetery and try to locate each of the names on the list to "verify" that they are indeed located in that cemetery. While you are at the cemetery look for clues on other stones that other persons interred there may be a civil war veteran (unit on stone, military stone etc) and add them to the list

4. Contact the church or institution that runs the cemetery and see if you can find a veteran list. Please provide us with contact information for the church or institution.

5. Take pictures of any missing pictures of headstones (will provide you a list of those missing)

6.  Send the updated information back to us and our researchers will research their history.

You will receive a copy of the completed report in PDF form and a physical copy for the institution . The cemetery report will be marked with you as the verifier!

2. Full Researcher

If you want to become a full researcher please contact us at Witscivilwar@gmail.com. At the least you will need an Ancestry account. Fold and newspapers.com are a plus. We will provide you with cloud storage for your project and provide you with other researching sites and materials to help

3. Other opportunities

There are other opportunities if you want to help!

Things you can do

1. Take headstone pictures to update pictures for the reports

2. Contact churches or institutions to hunt for veteran lists

3. Research our "red letters" try to figure out if the non-verified soldiers actually were soldiers

contact WITSCivilWar@gmail.com for more information
