VOLUNTEER!

Are you interested in helping WITS do this very important historical work?

We are looking for the following types of volunteers

After checking our map here to make sure the cemetery you want to volunteer for hasn’t been worked on

You can volunteer to work on an existing project or number of projects, whether it be your hometown cemetery or if you want to be adventurous and travel to cemeteries across the commonwealth we can use your help!

DATA HUNTERS:

The Commonwealth has thousands of cemeteries, and we need dedicated individuals to help us gather vital information. We are seeking volunteers to contact various organizations and obtain lists of veterans interred in these cemeteries. Most of these lists come in the form of rudimentary first name/last name or maybe even birthday/death days which serves as the foundation for our research.

DATA HUNTERS, will reach out to churches, cemetery organizations, veteran associations, and historical societies to acquire these lists. Once the project is complete, we will follow up to ensure that our reports reach the appropriate recipients.

We will provide you with storage space and templates.

STONE HUNTERS:

During our research, we occasionally discover inaccuracies in the provided lists, such as soldiers not being interred at the correct cemetery or errors in the listed dates (birthdate or death date). We are seeking volunteers to review these preliminary lists and visit the cemeteries to verify the dates on the headstones and ensure the soldier is indeed buried there. During this process you may also find clues that someone is a veteran that may not be on our lists. Volunteers may also be asked to take photographs of headstones where pictures are currently missing.

RESEARCHERS:

Researchers will take the preliminary list and using many different online tools, contacting organizations, and dedicated research complete the full lists of the cemeteries. Please note you will be expected to at least have a subscription to Ancestry and Fold 3

You will be provided with many different resources and links that we have collected over the last few years as well as online workspace to work on your cemeteries.
